Imperial and nautical units for Google Earth KML APRS view

The unit configuration selected in Options now applies to the Google Earth Network Link, which is produced when you click on the Google Earth KML link on aprs.fi. Fahrenheit temperatures are supported, too. US users should get Imperial units and Fahrenheit temperatures by default, UK users should get Imperial units and Celsius temperatures.

If you have installed the aprs.fi Google Earth APRS link before, and wish to change your units configuration, please do the following:
  1. Delete your existing link from Google Earth by right-clicking the top-level "APRS:" link and selecting Delete (not Delete Contents)
  2. Select your units configuration in the aprs.fi Options window
  3. Open a new KML link using the Google Earth KML link on aprs.fi
This way the new units configuration will be copied over to the Google Earth KML link. When you change your configuration again in the Options, you'll need to delete the existing link in Google Earth and open up a new one from aprs.fi.

Some UTF-8 character encoding issues were also fixed in the KML interface.

Hi. Some time ago I sent an email directly, querying your interest in having aprs.fi also reporting ACARS data on the map; suppose it went to the bit heaven... How about it? There is a free software (ACARSD) available, but I suppose it takes some hacking to get the data up on the map?

Another issue: would it be possible to make the filters (Don't show) also work for moving targets, in order to track only AIS vessels on the move? Now they affect only targets on the shown on the map..

Best regards, Thomas OH6NT

I'm not quite sure I'd put ACARS or ADS-B data on the map. Given the amount of hysteria about airline security the authorities probably would object strongly to publishing real-time airline position data on the web. I know, you can receive it yourself if you buy your own receiver (I have an ADS-B receiver), and this is just security by obscurity, but I'm not sure I want to be the one arguing with the authorities about this.

ACARS data is, I suppose, not very real time (available from select aircraft only now and then). ADS-B gives new data a couple times per second for each aircraft (for some aircraft). The current publicly available ADS-B data feeds are delayed by 5 minutes (for "security reasons"), and I'd hate to mix it with proper real-time tracking data.

Another issue: Yeah, it would. I've been thinking about making the filters apply to the other browsing views (maybe with an easy way to "click here to see hidden targets"). But no promises.

How about showing ship speeds in knots, the rest metric (or imperial if you prefer). I find ship speeds in km/h weird.

AIS data include speed in knots anyway.

How can I link to your server to send AIS data? Also, there is a whole network planning to cover Greece as well which may be interested to send feeds to you too- check it out here:

I personally prefer that all data shown on the same map are in the same units, so that they can be compared. Having separate unit selectors for different classes of tracking targets would make the Options window pretty complicated.

Besides, my code has no way of knowing (for sure) whether an APRS target is on sea, ground or air. Apart from the symbol graphics, which I wouldn't trust for the purpose.

AIS feeds are more then welcome. Please drop me an email (the address is on the blogger profile page) and I'll set you up with the details. Thank you!

I love aprs.fi, amazing system you've built up!

I was wondering if there were any additional views we could use in Google Earth?

I previously used http://www.aprsdepot.com and their system, so I had things for my callsign like:

* Fly to Present (same as you offer now?)
* Last 24 Hours
* Last 10 Days
* Last 100 Locations
